STEREO EDITOR SID ARCHIVE MAKER

While the Stereo Editor and StereoPlayer both expect to find the normal ".MUS", ".STR", and ".WDS" files for a SID, when uploading and downloading SIDs to/from a telecommunications network such as Q-Link, it is desirable to combine (or archive) all files associated with a particular song into a single file. You've probably seen these collections of files, all of which can simply be LOADed and RUN to extract ("dissolve") the files contained inside. The following filename endings are the most prominent:

".SAL" contains a .mus and a .wds file for a SID; ".SLR" contains a .mus and a .str file for a SID; ".MSW" contains a .mus, .str, and .wds file for a SID; ".PIL" Contains a .mus and a .pic (picture) file for a SID; ".WPL" contains a .mus, .pic, and .wds file for a SID.

Stereo Editor has the ability to save the SID in memory in any of the first three formats (picture files are not supported by Stereo Editor) by use of the "SID Archive Maker" utility.

You will be prompted for a filename for your SID archive, then it will be automatically written to disk as a self-dissolving archive. When that file is LOADed and RUN, your SID title block will be displayed in a pleasing format and the user will be asked to press a key to dissolve the files associated with that sid to his disk. Alternately, the STOP key can be used to abort the dissolve operation. After the files have been extracted, the user will be given the option to scratch the original archive from the disk.

Although Stereo Editor archives have a much more sophisticated look and feel than the original archives, they may still be dissolved using the Omega-Q and Omega-Q II utilities, and Q-Link's Music Connection software will also recognize the format of these files.
